Andy Provan was born in Greenock on New Year's Day in 1944. He was a major contributor in York's promotion season of 1964-65 and remained at the club for four years.

The little Scottish winger actually started his career with Morton before moving to Barnsley in 1963. Provan arrived on trial at Bootham Crescent during the summer of the following year. He was offered a contract with the club after scoring on his senior debut at Rochdale.

Although equally at home on either flank, Provan always favoured the number eleven shirt and was a regular provider of goals. An ever-present during his first season, he was second leading goalscorer on eighteen goals and went on to become the most prolific winger for the club since the legendary Billy Fenton in the 1950s.

One of his most famous strikes was against Bradford in September 1966, when chasing onto a through pass and dribbling around the keeper before falling to the ground, laying full-length and heading the ball into the net.

Not surprisingly he was a real crowd favourite until being sold to Chester for a £4,000 fee in August 1968. He later played for Wrexham, Southport and Torquay.
