Scottish international Peter Lorimer remains one of the most famous players to have ever represented York
City, making 32 appearances for the club during the 1979-80 season.

He was born in in Dundee in 1946 and joined Leeds United straight from school. The Scot proceeded to have a magnificent sixteen-year career at Elland Road as part of the famous Don Revie side. He made over six hundred appearances for them and won both Championship and FA Cup medals whilst gaining 21 international caps.
A move then followed to North America and a spell with Toronoto Blizzards, and upon his return to this country there was a frantic scramble for his services. And it was York City who, perhaps rather surprisingly, finally won the race for his signature.
In September 1979, 'Hot-Shot' Lorimer, as he was known over here ('Thunderfoot' had become his adopted nickname whilst in America), signed for fourth division York City. He made his debut for the club in a 2-0 home defeat to Peterborough United.
However, his obvious class and ferocious shooting thrilled the Bootham Crescent spectators over the coming months, and he scored nine goals - many of them in his trademark style. But he eventually went out on rather a sad note after being sent-off in his final game against Tranmere Rovers.
Lorimer returned to Toronto in the spring of 1980, and later that same year City decided against renewing his contract. Having being rejected by York, he then completed a surprise return to Leeds, where he went on to break their individual goalscoring record. |
