On Tuesday 13th March 2007, York City travelled to Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium, and produced one of their best away performances in recent memory as leading scorer Clayton Donaldson led the way with a superb hat-trick.

York City served up a truly magnificent performance to record a scintillating 5-0 victory against struggling Cambridge United at the Abbey Stadium.

The Minstermen were simply irresistible as revitalised leading scorer Clayton Donaldson ended his recent barren spell with a superb hat-trick, while the excellent Craig Farrell and on loan Hungarian-born centre-back Janos Kovacs were also on target.

The visitors made one change to their starting line-up as winger Martyn Woolford was recalled in place of Steve Bowey, who was rested due to a slight hamstring strain.

York were the first to threaten on eight minutes when Mark Convery struck a right-footed drive across goal following a short corner routine with Woolford.

Woolford also crossed for Donaldson to have a shot blocked before Neal Bishop hooked the loose ball over at the far post. Donaldson's neat flick from Tom Evans' long clearance then almost released Farrell but keeper Shane Herbert rushed out to claim.

The visitors continued to dominate and Convery's corner from the left was headed over by Bishop, while keeper Evans was finally forced into action on 20 minutes when racing from his line to clear from U's leading scorer Robbie Simpson.

The Minstermen were ahead sixty seconds later following a swift break from defence after a corner from the left had been successfully cleared, with skipper Emmanuel Panther immediately seizing possession and allowing Bishop to deliver an inch-perfect through ball for Farrell to run onto before striking a firm right-footed finish into Herbert's bottom right-hand corner from 15-yards.

Farrell then collected Woolford's pass and cleverly beat an opponent before keeper Herbert charged out to save at his feet, while the busy Convery saw another fierce shot deflected behind after Donaldson had combined with Nathan Peat.

The Minstermen were clearly relishing the opportunity of featuring on such a superb playing surface and their excellent movement and incisive passing continued to open up their opponents at every opportunity.

Fine work by Convery almost released Farrell in the area before the visitors doubled their advantage on 33 minutes when Farrell expertly brought the ball down and found Donaldson, who proceeded to strike a glorious left-footed angled drive from 18-yards into Herbert's top left-hand corner.

The hosts responded with defender Aidan Collins sending a near post header wide from Stephen Smith's corner, while their opponents were forced into a substitution after right-back Darren Craddock received a heavy blow to the face and was replaced by Anthony Lloyd.

Home keeper Herbert punched clear a late free-kick from Woolford, who also had a left-footed effort deflected wide from Convery's corner in the final action of the opening half.

The Minstermen came within inches of adding to their tally immediately following the restart when Farrell's blistering right-footed drive was turned against the crossbar by Herbert after Woolford had helped on Donaldson's cross from the left.

But the visitors didn't have long to wait as Woolford's subsequent inswinging corner from the right failed to prompt much in the way of a defensive challenge and on loan centre-back Kovacs powered in to head the ball home.

York chief Billy McEwan instantly withdrew skipper Panther in favour of Ross Greenwood and his side were again on the offensive when Kovacs headed wide from Farrell's free-kick.

Home substitute David Bridges offered some respite from the continuing onslaught when his 55th minute free-kick was headed against the bar by Dan Chillingworth, while substitute Greenwood reacted swiftly to charge down an effort on the edge of the area.

The visitors continued to offer a serious threat with their fluent approach play after wingers Woolford and Convery had exchanged flanks, and the natural order was restored when Farrell's 63rd minute corner from the left produced a sliced attempted clearance from midfielder Jon Brady and Donaldson rocketed an unstoppable right-footed finish into the roof of the net.

The home faithful were venting their frustration towards their side as dependable centre-back David McGurk executed a superb challenge on the edge of his own area before a vital block at the opposite end denied Farrell after a typically jinking run from Convery.

The Minstermen added a fifth in the 72nd minute when Woolford produced a fine left-footed cross from the right that cleared Farrell and allowed Donaldson to ghost in front of keeper Herbert and deflected a deft header into his right-hand corner to complete his hat-trick.

The travelling supporters were calling for a sixth goal as Farrell had a shot blocked at the near post after being released by Convery, who was then replaced by on loan striker Rob Elvins with fifteen minutes remaining.

Farrell had a free-kick saved by Herbert after Elvins had been fouled just outside the area before the visitors' defensive wall successfully blocked a set-piece at the opposite end.

York keeper Evans fell low to his left to collect a speculative long-range attempt after Kovacs had headed away an initial ball forward, while Elvins launched himself at the far post in an attempt to convert Peat's free-kick in the closing moments.

Donaldson also had another late drive blocked before Elvins was denied by a vital covering tackle in the area after the superb Farrell had linked up with Greenwood.

The final whistle prompted mass celebrations from visiting supporters that had just witnessed one of the most outstanding away performances in recent times.

Meanwhile, delighted hat-trick hero Donaldson appropriately claimed ownership of the match ball by swiftly concealing it under his shirt.
