York City recorded their highest-ever league victory against Southport at Bootham Crescent on 2nd February 1957.

There was quite a difference in both clubs standings at the time, with York challenging for promotion in Third Division North while their opponents were second from bottom of the table.

And it was actually the visitors who started well on a difficult surface as Miles had an early effort ruled out before Norman Wilkinson crossed on fourteen minutes for Arthur Bottom to open the scoring with a fierce drive from outside the area.

Billy Fenton soon went close to adding a second before his marker Lomas was injured and unable to take any further part in the game, which left his side with only ten-men.

York took advantage as Bottom was brought down in the box on 27 minutes, and duly picked himself up to beat goalkeeper Richardson from the spot.

Ron Mollatt and Bottom both went near to increasing the lead until Peter Wragg set-up Bottom to complete his hat-trick with a low drive off the inside of a post four minutes before the break.

There was still sufficient time left in the first-half for Bottom to strike the woodwork. After the interval, Billy Hill twice went close for York, who added to their tally on 59 minutes when Norman Wilkinson headed in Fenton's inviting cross.

Bottom and Wilkinson were both then brilliantly denied by valiant goalkeeper Richardson, but even he was left helpless as the home side scored five goals in an incredible nine minutes between the 75th and 83rd.

Firstly, Bottom claimed his fourth of the contest from Hill's cross and moments later Fenton dribbled through the visitors defence to make it six. Bottom's shot was then blocked and Gordon Brown cracked in the rebound to establish a magnificent seven, while Bottom was again provider as Wilkinson struck his second. Wragg soon added a ninth with a header from a right-wing cross before the tenth goal of the afternoon went ... to Southport - Charlton netting from the penalty spot after George Howe had handled inside the area.
