York City have fought their way into the FA Cup fourth round and faced non-league Bishop Auckland on 29th January 1955.
Bishop Auckland 1 York City 3
Following their magnificent victory over first division glamour club Blackpool in the previous round, York City were drawn away to top amateur outfit Bishop Auckland.
The north-east side had accounted for second division Ipswich Town at the third round stage, defeating them 3-0 in the replay after a battling 2-2 draw at Portman Road.
The match was all-ticket, with 3,700 York supporters in a crowd of 15,000.
It was to be a real 'battle of the giantkillers', a game that would ultimately decide which of these two unfancied sides would make the last sixteen of the world's greatest cup competition.
The Minstermen were unchanged as they lined up against the 'Bishops', who were to prove really gallant opposition in a hard fought and well contested cup clash.
Indeed the first-half saw a very even game, rich in excitement and high in thrills as the play swung rapidly from end to end.
York took the lead after six minutes when their inspirational inside-left Sid Storey shot home with a left-footed drive.
But the Bishops were not renowned cup fighters for nothing, and they immediately responded when Edwards stroked the ball past Tommy Forgan to level the scores.
The visitors attempted to stamp their authority on the match by adopting their usual swift, skillful attacking style, but found home goalkeeper Sharratt a resolute barrier as he made several fine stops.
The third division club started to dictate the play in the second-half, although their opponents were always a threat on the break.
Gradually the visitors took a grip on the proceedings, managing to stretch the amateur side's defence on a number of occasions.
In the 79th minute York goal-machine Arthur Bottom took a neat pass from outside-left Billy Fenton before side-stepping his marker and confidently striking the ball into the net.
Five minutes later, 'wing wizard' Billy Hughes was taken down in the box and Bottom settled the tie, making it 3-1 from the penalty spot.
York City were through to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup for only the second time in their history, where they were to be rewarded with a home tie against one of the most glamorous clubs in the country.
