York City's FA Trophy hopes were finally extinguished after Stevenage Borough front pair Steve Morison and Lee Boylan were both on target during the final twenty-one minutes of a 2-0 victory at Wembley Stadium.
The Minstermen defended well throughout and for the most part succeeded in protecting goalkeeper Michael Ingham, who was forced into only one seriously extended save from Peter Vincenti on 64 minutes.
However, Boro skipper Morison reacted quickest in the six-yard box to claim his 32nd goal of the campaign five minutes later before Boylan took advantage of a rare defensive lapse to half-volley a second deep into injury-time.
Meanwhile, York struggled for the duration in the final third, although teenage striker Adam Boyes twice went close and veteran Mark Greaves also crashed an effort over just before the break.
Martin Foyle's side actually opened brightly with Daniel McBreen scuffing wide of the far post inside thirty seconds after Richard Brodie had crossed from the right.
Gradually though Stevenage began to exert a degree of control, and Darren Murphy fired straight at Ingham following a swift turn on eight minutes. Danny Parslow then made a fine covering challenge to deny the dangerous Morison before the advancing Shaun Pejic drove wide of the near post at the opposite end.
Boro were enjoying plenty of success wide on the right through the attacking intent of right-back Ronnie Henry, while also being allowed too much space immediately in front of their opponents' defensive line, where Andy Drury and Gary Mills were enjoying regular success.

Most of their chances were, however, restricted to long-range. Mills launched a speculative 35-yard effort over following a short free-kick on fifteen minutes before Vincenti blazed over three minutes later. York keeper Ingham also had to charge out to block the run of Boylan after Morison had supplied the through ball, while Pejic hooked clear from close to his own line as Morison burst past Parslow midway through the half.
Stevenage continued to press with the overlapping Henry a constant threat down the right. Michael Bostwick dragged a right-footed shot wide from 25-yards as Ingham threw himself to his left, while Drury had an attempt charged down by Pejic on the edge of the six-yard area. Drury then despatched another 20-yard effort over the target just sixty seconds later before crossing for Vincenti to head the first of thee opportunities over.
York midfielder Simon Rusk provided a brief respite from the pressure with a 25-yard shot that cleared the bar after Pejic's cross had initially been headed out.
Nevertheless Boro created another clear opening when Morison held off both Parslow and Pejic on 33 minutes before his eight-yard shot was gratefully clutched by Ingham at his near post. Teenage striker Boyes scuffed a left-footed attempt wide at the opposite end, where leading scorer Brodie also despatched a tame left-footed strike straight at keeper Chris Day from the edge of the area.
York still hadn't countered the threat of attack-minded right-back Henry, and his cross witnessed Boylan sending a downward header wide of the far post on 35 minutes. Drury almost immediately hooked wide following another Henry burst forward, while City's response had the strangely subdued Levi Mackin having a right-footed drive blocked in the area and McBreen crashing the rebound over.
The Minstermen spurned a tremendous opportunity four minutes before the break. A delightful chipped pass forward from Rusk allowed Boyes to hold off the challenge of Henry and fire straight at Day from inside the box. But the natural order was soon restored with Henry again crossing for Vincenti to head over before Brodie hooked a speculative left-footed effort over for York.
Boro keeper Day also had to chase out to clear ahead of McBreen from another threaded Rusk assist, while Drury drilled a free-kick over in reply. York then fashioned their second genuine opportunity right on the stroke of half-time when Ben Purkiss' free-kick fell towards Greaves, who firstly struck team-mate David McGurk before in turn lashing the rebound over.

To their credit York had done well to still be on even terms at the interval. However, the restart soon provided the chance for Boylan to threaten the left-hand post after Morison had knocked on Day's clearance. There were also problems when Henry's deep cross from the right wasn't successfully taken by Ingham five minutes into the half. Sixty seconds later and hopeful York claims for handball inside the area against Bostwick following a Brodie shot were quickly waved aside.
Stevenage continued to appear the much more polished outfit, with Murphy's 20-yard attempt striking Parslow and looping over. By contrast their opponents were finding it really tough going in advanced positions, although that was briefly threatened on the hour when a glorious cross-field pass by Purkiss prompted a positive break inside from Boyes before he drilled wide of the far post. A clear push from Bostwick on Brodie then had Purkiss having a free-kick deflected behind.
Boro created another opening on 64 minutes when Vincenti's well-struck 25-yard half-volley tested the trusty wrists of Ingham, who simply beat it away with disdain. Boylan then turned Pejic on the right before his low cross was hacked away from close to his own line by McGurk at the expense of a corner. And from the resultant set-piece the deadlock was finally broken. Drury supplied the delivery from the right that was headed on by Mark Roberts for Morison to eventually force home from five-yards.
York substitute Onome Sodje was far less potent two minutes later with an early-taken 25-yard shot before his side went close to conceding a second on 73 minutes. Henry, yet again, was the provider with another cross that was headed wide of the far post by Vincenti.
The Minstermen weren't really appearing like they would find a way back into the contest. Purkiss' free-kick ended with a looped McGurk header drifting harmlessly towards Day before Brodie curled another set-piece beyond the left-hand angle. Their skipper Parslow then almost sent an attempted diving headed clearance inside his own near post from Drury's cross with ten minutes remaining. Midfielder Mackin also went perilously near to a red card following a high challenge on Murphy two minutes later.
With time almost up Brodie struck a left-footed effort from distance through to Day on the first bounce, while Purkiss sidefooted another 25-yard free-kick wide of the near post during the four minutes of added time.
And in the fourth of those minutes Stevenage doubled their advantage. Morison took a quick throw-in that caught the York defence taking a final lingering look at the new stadium, with Boylan hooking an excellent right-footed finish over Ingham from the right-hand side of the area.
