York City's latest signing Tyrone Berry is eager to relaunch his career at KitKat Crescent after joining the club on non-contract terms.

The 22-year-old started out at Crystal Palace before several short spells followed at Rushden & Diamonds, Crawley Town, Stevenage Borough, Gillingham and Grays Athletic.

“I started last season at Gillingham but was only there on a month-to-month basis and the contract they offered me was not really substantial so I had to move on," he told The Press. "I then helped Grays regain their Blue Square Premier status but they were not sure about the managerial situation so I had to leave there as well.

“I haven’t played any games this season and, sometimes, a move away from home is the best way forward because I can regain focus and concentrate on football with no outside influences, so that’s good and I’ve been very impressed with the club.

“I jumped at the opportunity to come here. I’ve been training with the lads for two weeks and, hopefully, I can earn a proper contract and do well for York City.”

Berry could actually play a role if manager Martin Foyle does as he has already threatened to do and switch to a 4-3-3 formation away from home.

“I normally play on the right or left wing, but I’ve played as a striker in the past as well," continued Berry.

"Where I play is not a problem for me and I’m happy to fill whatever position the manager wants me to.”

York boss Foyle added: “He’s been like a breath of fresh air.

“He’s enthusiastic and can play anywhere up front and as part of a front three. He’s got something.

“He can beat a man and, from what I’ve seen, he deserves a chance on non-contract terms. He’s fit and has been let down by certain clubs.

“I’ve heard him called a bad boy, but that’s so wrong and I’ve spoken to managers and coaches who have worked with him, who have confirmed he’s a great lad.”
