Teenage striker Adam Boyes is impressed by the York City squad following his return on loan from Scunthorpe United.
Boyes turns nineteen this weekend and originally appeared to end his rather brief Minstermen career with an appearance at Wembley Stadium in the FA Trophy final last May.A surprise move to Championship newcomers Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee then followed in the summer, before manager Martin Foyle brought Boyes back to KitKat Crescent after an injury to expensive close-season recruit Michael Gash.
Boyes told the Press: “The squad is much better than last season. There’s a good football team here now.
“Last season, we struggled to win games but now there’s more confidence and I didn’t realise how good the likes of Alex (Lawless) and Neil (Barrett) were. I hadn’t really heard about them when they signed for the club but, when you see them in training, they look like they should be playing at a higher level.”
Still to make a senior appearance with Scunthorpe, Boyes was quick to rejoin his former club on loan when asked despite a significant drop in standard.
“When I got the phone call from Martin Foyle I saw it as a good opportunity to get my match fitness levels up and get some games in because I’ve only been playing for the reserves at Scunthorpe. I’ve been playing up front as a lone striker there and chasing about without seeing much of the ball. I’m also playing with a lot of young lads mostly and, against the likes of Middlesbrough, you end up doing a lot of chasing.
“(Scunthorpe manager) Nigel Adkins has basically told me to come here, play some games and get my confidence back up by scoring lots of goals and enjoying myself, which I hope I can do. I’m here for a month and would be happy to extend that and stay longer.”
