York City manager Martin Foyle defended his club's late arrival after their FA Cup third round tie at Stoke City had to be delayed.

The Minstermen's team coach finally arrived at the Britannia Stadium just before 3pm. Severe weather and traffic queues on the M62 caused the kick-off to be put back half-an-hour.

"People said we should have come down overnight but we set off at 10.15, which was ample time to get here," Foyle told BBC Radio York.

"It was one of those days when everything happened against us. We arrived at three o'clock but we are not using that as an excuse.

"Stoke were great about it and the referee was fantastic and organised," he added.

"We played a game of football and I'm not looking at that as an excuse.

"The players had half an hour to warm up. Yes, it's a little bit of a panic, but look on the bright side - they didn't have time to think about it, go out, look at the pitch and start worrying about Stoke City.

"I think Tony Pulis would say we were organised and hard to beat. And, although we defended them very well in training, on the day the trajectory of Rory Delap's throws are frightening, It's a missile that could keep Stoke in the Premiership again."
