Foyle: ''We need to play better''

By Steve Jones
Monday, 8th February 2010
Martin Foyle refused to get too carried away over York City's chances of lifting the Blue Square Premier championship trophy at the end of the season.

Michael Rankine scored the only goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Kettering Town at the weekend, which means that York have now taken 31 out of their last available 33 points, while remaining unbeaten in the league since the end of October.

Meanwhile, both Stevenage Borough and Oxford United slipped up on Saturday, to leave the Minstermen only a solitary point behind the pair in third place, although the U's do currently have two games in hand on both of their rivals.

“There might be a big thing made of the other teams dropping points at the weekend but we still have a batch of away games to come," Foyle told The Press.

"Seven points from our last nine on the road is a fantastic return but we need to play a bit better still.”

But he was still delighted with the commitment of his players as they ground out a fourth 1-0 victory in five games.

“There won’t be many pretty games in February or March but we are grinding out results with two banks of four because that’s hard to break down if the players know what their jobs are.

"If it wasn’t for a fantastic save by Michael Ingham, we would have been a goal down in the first ten minutes when we were giving silly free-kicks away again but Kettering didn’t really hurt us after that.

“We put Jimmy (Sangare) on in midfield with 20 minutes to go because I felt confident we would go on to win the game.”
