Former Montserrat international striker Junior Mendes has failed in his attempts to earn a contract with York City.

Mendes (33) had recently been training with the Minstermen after being released by Aldershot in the summer.

He appeared for a York reserve side in a 1-0 defeat at Harrogate Town earlier this week, but clearly failed to sufficiently impress manager Martin Foyle.

“He came into training and he’s worked hard but he was always chasing his fitness levels,” Foyle told the Press.

“I can’t hang around for a month to get someone up. He’s certainly got something and maybe someone else will step in.

“It was just his fitness levels were my main concern. I need players now.”

Trevor Benjamin scored the only goal with a 51st minute header at the CNG Stadium as the visitors gave run-outs to Adam Smith, Levi Mackin and Craig Nelthorpe.
