York City manager Martin Foyle admitted his side were poor in their FA Trophy second round tie at Newport County and never really showed during the first-half in particular.
The Minstermen scrambled a 0-0 draw to take the Blue Square South leaders back to KitKat Crescent next Tuesday evening.
"We started OK for the first five minutes and then we started getting a little bit negative," Foyle told BBC Radio York.
"We put the keeper under pressure on a poor pitch. That's what I couldn't accept. All of a sudden we gave them a lifeline and chance after chance.
"Ingham brought some good saves off but other than that I thought defensively we looked poor," he continued.
"I said to the lads there at half-time it was eleven players that never turned out in the first-half. But I'm not going to criticise them too much because they've run a lot of miles lately and worked very hard.
"But sometimes you play badly and you haven't lost a game of football and that's a good sign. But we were off all over the pitch tonight."
The winners will face Corby Town in the next round after they came out on top 2-1 at Stalybridge Celtic.
