Striker Jason Walker scored twice on his debut as York City secured a hard-fought and late 2-1 victory at newly-promoted Ebbsfleet United.
The Minstermen appeared set for a shock opening day defeat when Callum Willock opened the scoring with ten minutes remaining despite appearing to impede goalkeeper Michael Ingham.
That followed their opponents being reduced to ten men on 69 minutes after midfielder Tom Phipp lunged at another impressive York debutant, Adriano Moké.
But the visitors were back level within a minute as Ashley Chambers was brought down inside the area by goalkeeper Joe Welch. Walker stepped up and calmly despatched his penalty.
Then deep into stoppage time York's Republic of Ireland Under-21 international right-back Lanre Oyebanjo delivered a wonderful cross headed in by the waiting Walker.
The visitors had earlier wasted the best chance of the opening half when Matty Blair broke away but was denied when attempting to round Welch.
York keeper Ingham tipped over a Liam Enver-Marum header moments later before team-mate Andre Boucaud struck a rasping drive against the underside of the crossbar following the break.
