York City returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory against Blue Square Bet Premier newcomers Stockport County at Edgeley Park.

Matty Blair Following a lifeless opening half the visitors went ahead seven minutes into the second period as Matty Blair headed in Jason Walker's excellent cross to the far post.

Former Everton striker Nick Chadwick should really have levelled for a poor Stockport side moments later but only managed to head over Michael Paton's cross from around six-yards.

And the visitors made them pay with just four minutes remaining as recalled skipper Chris Smith neatly supplied Blair and his cross was sidefooted in by Walker for his tenth goal of the season.

The Hatters had rarely looked like scoring but did manage a consolation in the final minute of added time with Paton heading in a delivery from substitute Danny Whitehead.

Earlier Chadwick nodded over another opportunity and York goalkeeper Michael Ingham fended away from the lively Paton, while leading scorer Walker found the side-netting from a narrow angle in reply with home keeper Matthew Glennon out of position.

It improved marginally following the interval as both sides continued to struggle in the heat, with the visitors usually having the edge in front of a 3,753 crowd - including an impressive 680 travelling supporters.
