These two promotion-chasing sides couldn't be separated after a hard-fought draw in front of a large crowd at Bootham Crescent.
Fluent York played the vast majority of the football but struggled to find their way past a strong and resolute Wrexham defence and it was the visitors who could have actually come away with maximum points.
Returning midfielder Jamie Tolley was denied by a brilliant save from former Dragons goalkeeper Michael Ingham from twelve-yards after Adrian Cieslewicz had chased down the right on nineteen minutes.
Then on the hour Ingham produced another great stop from player-manager Andy Morrell's six-yard header after Joe Clarke's initial shot had been charged down.
For all their patient approach work York, who had made seven changes from last week's FA Cup defeat to the same opposition, didn't really overly trouble visiting keeper Joslain Mayebi during the opening half.
New England 'C' cap Ashley Chambers was booked early for adjudged simulation after going down under challenge from Mark Creighton on the edge of the area. Midfielder Patrick McLaughlin then showed quick feet and drilled over and Jon Challinor also lifted an effort wide.
A superb solo break from Chambers in turn ended with his shot being deflected wide and returning leading scorer Jason Walker also had an attempt blocked before Tolley struck a free-kick over at the opposite end just before the break.
The Minstermen made a bright opening to the second-half and Chambers forced an immediate save from Mayebi, who also held onto efforts from Walker and Challinor, while Cieslewicz struck just past the post in reply.
Home striker Chambers then couldn't find sufficient power from another attempt to really trouble Mayebi before substitute Adriano Moké had a shot blocked before having a later effort turned over by the Cameroon-born keeper.
But Wrexham continued to show just why they were top of the league and still appeared dangerous on the break. Substitute Lee Fowler forced another save from Ingham, who then came out to cover the threat of Curtis Obeng before Jamal Fyfield made a crucial covering challenge.
The former Northern Ireland international keeper also clutched onto a late header from substitute Danny Wright as the honours remained shared.
